When replacing a light fixture, I found that there is no copper wire bare ground. Should I add?
My room Wash has two switches on the power of a light fixture and power up an exhaust fan. Coming to the machine switches are two son: Red and White. The power goes to the top of the first switch (FAN), and from there to the top of the second switch (devices lighting) and thence out of the box in the garage. The fan switch has an orange wire running to the ceiling. The light switch has a yellow wire running to the ceiling. Over there is a white neutral wire from the ceiling and the garage. The three white son are all connected (garage ceiling and the house). I replaced the two matches with a combination light / exhaust fan. The new fixture has a green ground wire-Do I need to run a new thread for that? If yes, where do I sign? I must add that the green wire is attached to the metal shell of the fan. If I need to start a new thread, where do I run?
It is obvious that the responses you received are people who do not understand what the equipment grounding conductor not, how does the grounding electrical, or what the National Electrical Code requires ground equipment. If your house has a wiring system Type NM cable ( "string" or Romex - Romex is actually a brand name like Xerox), and it is an old house, you may have a system without merit. If yes, you do not glue the green (other times bare copper) equipment grounding jumper nothing. There is no way for any current failure to turn, so it will simply be there, doing nothing. If your house has a metal pipe, or wire type AC Cable (commonly called "BX", another brand name), simply connect this thread (IT Liaison) to the metal box using either a 10-32 GREEN vis the earth, or a list of green earth clip. If the connections between pipe sections are tight, which is the current path of your default configuration. Simply connecting a driver with a water hose, metal will not provide any type of protection. The Code clearly states that land should not be used as a dirt road or a driver to clear defects, there is simply too much resistance. Ground rods, Ufer Grounds, water pipes metal are used as "grounding paths," according to the terms of the Code the most recent (2008 NEC), simply as a means of trying disperse voltage spikes or surges caused by lightning or contact between your lower corporate services and a leader of a higher voltage. Therefore, the code does not replace 2-slot, unsubstantiated receptacle with 3-slot, grounded receptacles, unless certain other conditions are met. After the third hole, for connection to the land of a cord unit is misleading. There is no way to deliver equipment ground if the equipment may be damaged without the knowledge of the owner. It is safer to know that the ground equipment is not than relying on a path to ground that does not exist. I will now turn the soap box to anyone who wants to try to contradict me using everything they believe they have found in the NEC.
