Can I hose off my horse after a workout in the winter, if not too cold?
My horse is a sweater. Typical thoroughbred. Even if it is only mounted around 20mins it still breaks a sweat. I only fear that the cold water will give him a cold and will make him sick. Is this true? If I can not pipe, it is more efficiant ways to cool off?
Give your horse a clip where he sweats the more - so if he sweats mostly on the neck and around the circumference to provide a trace clip (neck and belly) - then there is less hair to dry. Make sure you to rugs in place to compensate for the loss of hair! If you do not want to clip, I let the sweat and the brush him off you do later, he is kept warm and receives not cooling. If it is really sweating may be the sponge if it is not too wet, then rug up to keep warm. Hope this helps
